WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America, issued the following statement regarding the announcement by President Barack Obama that Milwaukee, Wisconsin has been named the winner of the “Healthy Communities Challenge”:
“As President Obama made clear in his speech today in Milwaukee, six years after its passage, the Affordable Care Act is working. Thanks to the ACA, more than 20 millionAmericans have gained coverage, and the uninsured rate has dropped below 10 percent for the first time in our history.
“Much of that success is due to the vast coalition of local organizations across the country working tirelessly to help their communities find quality, affordable coverage. That’s why I’m so thrilled to congratulate Milwaukee on enrolling more than 38,000 new people in the Milwaukee area during this open enrollment, and being named the winner of the White House ‘Healthy Communities Challenge.’ Led by Mayor Barrett, theenrollment coalition in Milwaukee helped a total of about 89,000 people enroll or re-enroll in coverage. I’m particularly proud of our partners at the Milwaukee Enrollment Network, who helped to develop a coordinated outreach plan for more than 100 area assister organizations; and Covering Wisconsin, who did critical work in Milwaukee and across the state to help connect low-income families to coverage.
“Our vision at Enroll America is that one day, enrollment becomes a way of life in every community in America. Milwaukee provides a powerful example of how communities who invest in and institutionalize enrollment are healthier and more secure.”
