Statement from Enroll America on 12.7 Million Americans Enrolled in Coverage

Thursday, February 4, 2016

WASHINGTON – Today, Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America, issued the following statement regarding the announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that about 12.7 million Americans enrolled in coverage during the third open enrollment period:

“Today, we’re celebrating the news that about 12.7 million Americans enrolled in quality, affordable health coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace during the third open enrollment period. It’s especially encouraging that HealthCare.Gov saw 4 million new enrollees, and 70% of those who reenrolled in coverage actively selected their plans – a significant uptick from the last open enrollment period. After several years of hard work helping consumers learn about the options available to them under the Affordable Care Act, we are thrilled with the progress we’ve made so far. Thanks to the dedication of our thousands of partners across the country, it’s encouraging to see the enrollment coalition grow and dive deeper into communities to find the uninsured and help consumers enroll year after year. From hospitals, providers, and health centers, to churches and colleges, communities are coming together to make sure their friends and neighbors have the enrollment resources they need to get covered.

“Now, more than 90% of Americans are insured, which is more than ever before. And while we’ve seen incredible progress over the past few years, rest assured that this effort is not over. We know that there is still much work to be done to make the success we’ve seen become permanent, to engage and support the remaining uninsured and newly enrolled, and to continue to improve the consumer experience. Over the next few months, we’ll be busy analyzing what we learned this enrollment period to identify the most successful outreach and enrollment tactics, and will be sharing best practices at our annual State of Enrollment conference in May. And we’ll continue to grow and empower the enrollment coalition at the local level so we can continue our legacy of success in the years to come.”
