Enroll America Statement on 8.2 Million Consumers Enrolled or Renewed through Marketplace

WASHINGTON – Today, Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America, issued the following statement regarding the new data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reporting 8.2 million Americans in the HealthCare.gov states have selected a plan or been automatically renewed through the Health Insurance Marketplace:

“Today’s announcement that more than 8.2 million Americans – an increase of 29% over this time last year – have chosen a plan or been automatically renewed on the Health Insurance Marketplace makes clear that the success we’ve seen under the Affordable Care Act is not just holding steady: it is growing and thriving. Americans are hungry for quality, affordable health care coverage, and when they have the opportunity and information they need, they are eager to enroll. People want clear, personalized information about how to enroll, which is why use of our digital tools like the Get Covered Plan Explorer and Connector has spiked over the last few weeks.

“I’m also thrilled that about 2.4 million consumers new consumers have signed up for coverage, already a full one third higher than the number that signed up by January 1 during the last enrollment period. Perhaps more impressively, more than 2.1 million Americans under the age of 35 enrolled by the deadline for January coverage, basically double the number enrolled at this time last year. These numbers clearly demonstrate that as enrollment continues to grow, the demographic make-up of the marketplace enrollee pool continues to evolve as well.

“The auto-renewal process is a critical safety net to make sure consumers who are satisfied with their plan can stay covered without disruption, but we encourage all enrolled consumers to revisit the Marketplace to make sure they are getting the best price and plan for their situation. The fact that millions of Americans are actively renewing their coverage – and millions are enrolling for the very first time – is a testament to the work of the enrollment coalition across the country. Today’s announcement makes clear that we have great momentum as we head into the final month of enrollment, and Enroll America, along with our more than 6,700 partners across the country, are excited to build on this success to make sure as many Americans as possible get covered and stay covered.”
