WASHINGTON, DC – This month’s “#GetCovered Champion,” Michigan Works! (MW!), works directly with job-seeking Michiganders in Oakland County, which includes Ferndale, Oak Park, Pontiac, Southfield, Troy and Waterford, to help them develop skills and connect with employers looking for qualified candidates. For the last year, the Oakland County branch of MW! has also partnered with Enroll America to make sure uninsured job seekers know about their coverage options under the Affordable Care Act and can work with a free, in-person enrollment assister if they have questions.
Though the Affordable Care Act open enrollment period is now closed, some people who experience life-changing events – like losing job-based coverage – are still eligible to get covered right away. Because MW! interacts with Oakland County residents experiencing life-changing events every day, they help ease the transition by connecting them with personalized enrollment help and affordable coverage.
“Our studies show that a face-to-face meeting with an enrollment assister is one of the most effective ways to help the uninsured find quality, affordable health insurance,” said Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America. “By creating a one-stop-shop for job seekers, Michigan Works! has become a trusted staple of the community, and a place where people know they can come for help and advice – whether it’s on writing a resume or how to enroll in affordable health coverage. Thanks to their leadership, Oakland County residents can look for work without worrying that an unexpected illness or injury will break their bank.”
During the second enrollment period, MW! hosted over 40 Affordable Care Act enrollment events that allowed the uninsured to sit down one-on-one with an enrollment assister to talk about their coverage options and enroll in a plan. They also integrated Enroll America tools – like the Get Covered Connector, which allows the uninsured to find and schedule appointments with enrollment assisters in their area – into their offices, creating a hub for the uninsured to schedule appointments to get enrolled.
“Michigan Works! is dedicated to helping Oakland County residents find work and to easing the transitions between jobs,” said John Almstadt, Director of Oakland County Michigan Works! “That’s why we’re helping our clients learn about their coverage options and protect themselves and their families with affordable coverage. Knowing that they’re still protected by health coverage brings peace of mind and security during one of the most stressful times in a person’s life.”
MW! also works extensively with community members who are eligible for Medicaid, which has year-round enrollment that allows anyone who is eligible to apply right away for free or low-cost coverage. July 30 marked the 50-year anniversary since Medicaid was created, and 71.1 million Americans have enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in the last half century, including more than 12 million since the first open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act began.
MW! partners with organizations across the state to connect job seekers with employers. Serving nearly 4 million customers each year, MW! is made up of 25 local MW! agencies that focus on talent development and meeting the needs of local employers. Any Michigander who files for unemployment must visit a MW! service center, so they are a true resource for job seekers across Michigan.
Each month this summer, Enroll America will be highlighting a “#GetCovered Champion” who is using innovative outreach techniques to reach the uninsured in their community, and help them understand the insurance options and financial help available to them through the Affordable Care Act.
