WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America, issued the following statement regarding the 50th Anniversary of Medicaid:
“Fifty years ago today Medicaid was signed into law, expanding health coverage to millions of pregnant women, children, people living with disabilities, and low and moderate income families across the country. Over the last half century, Medicaid has been a game changer for many of the most vulnerable Americans, providing quality, affordable health coverage that would otherwise have been out of reach. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid enrollment continues to grow and cover even more Americans today, with 12.8 million more enrolled in Medicaid coverage since October 2013. The increase in Medicaid enrollment has been largest in states that decided to expand Medicaid, and millions of Americans do not have an affordable option in states that chose not to expand Medicaid. Still, Medicaid enrollment has grown significantly even in non-expansion states, because the unprecedented grassroots campaign to inform Americans about their new options through the Affordable Care Act has also reached many who are eligible for traditional Medicaid. Enroll America and our partners are proud to contribute to that ongoing outreach effort, and we’re grateful that Medicaid will continue to provide millions of Americans with coverage they can count on.”
