WASHINGTON, DC – Though Affordable Care Act enrollment is now closed, some people who experience life-changing events like a marriage or birth of a child are still eligible to get covered right away. This month’s “#GetCovered Champion,” Columbus Public Health (CPH), sends thousands of birth certificates to new parents every year, and they are now partnering with Enroll America in Columbus to make sure those parents know about their coverage options through the Affordable Care Act.
“Columbus Public Health’s efforts to educate its patients should be a model for city governments and health care organizations across the country,” said Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America. “As a trusted voice in its community, Columbus Public Health is helping thousands of new families learn about their coverage options and find a plan that fits their needs and budget. Due in part to CPH’s leadership, many of their neighbors now have the peace of mind that comes with knowing they’re protected by quality, affordable coverage.”
Every week, CPH mails out about 600 new birth certificates. Now, those envelopes will also include an insert about the Affordable Care Act, and how new parents can get covered through a special enrollment period. The inserts are crafted with key messages from Enroll America’s enrollment research, and includes information about the Get Covered Connector, which allows people to make an appointment online to get in-person assistance to enroll.
“Helping our residents achieve their optimum health is a key priority at Columbus Public Health. Giving our communities the tools to gain affordable access to quality care is critical,” said Dr. Teresa Long, Columbus Public Health Commissioner. “That’s why we’re dedicated to helping our patients, clients and residents understand their options under the Affordable Care Act and make the best health coverage decision for themselves and their loved ones.”
Aimed at protecting the health and improving the lives of Columbus residents, CPH is a branch of the Columbus city government comprised of a range of programs providing clinical, environmental, health promotion, and population-based services. In July, Columbus Public Health will join Enroll America to host the 2015 Columbus State of Enrollment Summit, which will bring together organizations and grassroots volunteers from across the city that worked to educate the uninsured and help them enroll in coverage during the second enrollment period that closed on February 15, 2015.
Each month this summer, Enroll America will be highlighting a “#GetCovered Champion” who is using innovative outreach techniques to reach the uninsured in their community, and help them understand the insurance options and financial help available to them through the Affordable Care Act.
