FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thursday, February 5, 2015
Washington, DC – With the February 15 deadline quickly approaching, Enroll America’s grassroots Get Covered America campaign is working nonstop in communities across the country to get the word out to consumers about their health coverage options available through the Affordable Care Act and provide the resources necessary to support the surge of interest from folks eager to get covered during the next ten days.
During the first open enrollment period, most consumers waited until the final month to enroll in coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Though a working website and an experienced enrollment coalition have helped enrollment already exceed 9.9 million, many enrollment experts predict a similar if more limited deadline surge this year, and Get Covered America is already seeing an uptick in interest from consumers and activity from volunteers on the ground:
- Last week, over 5,600 consumers made appointments on the Get Covered Connector – a tool used to schedule free appointments with in-person assisters – a 44% increase from the average week thus far in the second enrollment period.
- Volunteer activity has increased, and staff and volunteers have already made 20% more follow-up calls to interested consumers in the first month of 2015 than during the first six weeks of the open enrollment period.
- Site traffic on GetCoveredAmerica.org is up 250% from this time last month, as consumers look for information about their options and use tools like the Get Covered Calculator to find out how much financial help they might qualify for.
Get Covered America staff and volunteers on the ground are holding more than 1,100 enrollment events over the final three weekends of the enrollment period, and they are scaling up those events to handle larger and larger crowds as the deadline approaches. In-person assister partners are also reporting greater demand from consumers as well. For instance, at a recent enrollment event at The Gallery mall in Philadelphia, over 120 people stopped by to get more information about the law and receive on-site enrollment help.

In an effort to draw attention to the February 15 deadline fast approaching, the Countdown to Get Covered bus tour is half-way through its journey as it crosses into Georgia today after making six stops in Alabama and North Carolina. The brightly colored bus is traveling across the South this week to showcase enrollment resources in key communities and remind consumers that the clock is ticking to get covered by February 15. After making three stops in Georgia, the bus will continue on to Florida, where it will crisscross the Sunshine State and end in Miami.

This week also marks Hospital Week of Action, as Enroll America and 25 hospital groups are working together to highlight and celebrate the important role that hospitals play in connecting consumers with health coverage. During more than 80 events this week at hospitals across the country, the uninsured will have a chance to learn about their options under the Affordable Care Act and receive free in-person assistance with the enrollment process. Over the weekend, for instance, CentroMed health center in San Antonio, TX held back-to-back enrollment events where over 40 consumers had appointments to get one-on-one enrollment assistance, and many other consumers attended workshops to increase health insurance literacy in the community.
