“Coverage is Coming”: As First Enrollment Deadline Approaches, Enroll America Ramps Up Effort to Help Americans Get Covered, Stay Covered

Consumers who enroll by December 15 will be covered starting on January 1.

WASHINGTON, DC – This week Get Covered America, the national grassroots consumer campaign of Enroll America, is boosting efforts to make sure both the uninsured and those who are reenrolling understand they must sign up on the Health Insurance Marketplace by December 15 in order to secure health coverage starting on New Year’s Day. During the “Coverage is Coming” outreach blitz this week, Get Covered America staff and volunteers will make more than 75,000 phone calls this week alone to encourage consumers to enroll in coverage, and more than a million more consumers will receive emails reminding them to take action before the deadline. Get Covered America will also work with in-person assister organizations to host more than 600 outreach and enrollment events to answer questions and help consumers complete the enrollment process.

“Nearly a month into this enrollment period, we know that the Health Insurance Marketplace is off to a strong start,” said Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America. “But there is still a lot of work to be done to reach the millions more who stand to benefit. That’s why we’re launching this all-hands-on-deck effort to make sure as many families as possible can enjoy the holidays knowing they’ll enter the new year with quality, affordable health insurance.”

While this open enrollment period ends on February 15, consumers have to complete the Marketplace enrollment process by December 15 in order to have coverage starting on January 1 (those who qualify for Medicaid can enroll year round on a rolling basis). During the “Coverage is Coming” outreach push this week, Get Covered America staff and volunteers will head out to shopping malls, churches, community centers, local clinics, and public libraries to get consumers the information they need to enroll in coverage before the deadline.

As part of that effort, Get Covered America is re-launching their highly successful follow-up call program, and will make more than 75,000 reminder phone calls to consumers who have already identified themselves as interested in enrolling in or renewing their coverage. Last year, consumers were more likely to enroll with every follow-up contact they received from a Get Covered America employee or volunteer.

Get Covered America data also shows that consumers were nearly twice as likely to complete the enrollment process if they got help from an in-person assister, so all of the consumers reached will be encouraged to attend one of the more than 600 outreach and enrollment events Get Covered America will be hosting this week in partnership with navigators, Certified Application Counselors, and other assisters across the country. And thanks to the Get Covered Connector, consumers are now able to quickly schedule a specific appointment time online, either at an enrollment event or during office hours for a participating assister in their area.

Since the end of the first open enrollment period, Get Covered America has maintained a staff of over 200 to continue building a strong presence in communities leading up to the second open enrollment period. In order to meet the challenge of reaching both the renewal population and the remaining uninsured during a shorter enrollment period, Get Covered America has built a larger coalition armed with more efficient outreach tactics that will reach even more consumers this year than last. With the support of more than 4,600 partner organizations and 12,000 active volunteers, the grassroots campaign is poised to reach millions of consumers with information about enrolling in coverage through the Affordable Care Act.
