Washington, DC – Usually, people call on taxicab drivers to pick them up. But this time, Get Covered America went directly to the taxicab drivers at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport and set up enrollment assistance inside “The Bullpen” to get busy cab drivers signed up for coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace. With the March 31 deadline just 10 days away, the drivers appreciated the coordinated effort and signed up for health insurance in droves. The daily “Countdown to Get Covered Series” features stories of creative events and consumer outreach from the frontlines of enrollment. The previous “Countdown to Get Covered” updates are available here.
Get Covered America field organizers visited the Domestic and International “Bullpens”—the areas where drivers wait for their fares to be assigned—to offer Health Insurance Marketplace information to taxi drivers. They distributed literature, discussed documents needed to complete enrollment and set appointments for drivers to visit with in-person assisters.
By the second day, an enrollment site was set up inside the Bullpen for drivers to meet with in-person assisters. Organizers continued to canvass, give presentations, and distribute Get Covered America literature. In just the first two days, they had collected contact information from about 100 uninsured individuals, held about 200 conversations, and saw 10 drivers enrolled in the Marketplace, a testament to the appetite the taxicab drivers had for the new health insurance access.
On the days following, the good news continued: one taxicab driver got dental and vision coverage for $45 per month and exclaimed, “It’s great that you guys are here for us.” One of the managers, Yonus Shermake, agreed that “everyone is excited, but no one has been here to answer them until you!”
Get Covered America will return next week to assist more drivers before the March 31 deadline.
