Washington, DC – Today, Get Covered America launched the daily “Countdown to Get Covered Series,” which will feature stories of creative events and consumer outreach from the frontlines of enrollment. With just 14 days left to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace, Get Covered America will host daily enrollment opportunities in 27 metropolitan areas across the country. The campaign’s hundreds of staff, thousands of partners, and tens of thousands of volunteers are working in communities across the country to connect consumers with the information and resources they need to enroll in health coverage before the March 31 deadline. Each day, the “Countdown to Get Covered” series will highlight an event or outreach tactic from one of our 11 staffed states to show how Get Covered America is engaging those who stand to benefit from the new insurance options and motivating them to action.

Get Covered America Enrollment Event in Florida Blossoms into a Weekly Sunday Series at Community Churches

A consumer learns about her health care options at one of the “5 Sundays in March” events at Open Door Baptist Church in Eatonville, FL

What started out as a single Affordable Care Act enrollment event in an Orlando neighborhood has turned into a month-long outreach effort through the collaborative efforts of a coalition determined to bring quality, affordable healthcare to the uninsured.

Get Covered America, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, SEIU and FOCUS Orlando, collectively known as “The Coalition for a Healthy Central Florida,” are hosting “5 Sundays in March” enrollment events at five area churches.

“We were planning an enrollment event for the month of March, and when we looked at the calendar to schedule a date, we noticed there were five Sundays in March,” Get Covered America Organizer Jeannine Gage said. “We thought with our good relationship with the faith community, we could engage them to maximize those Sundays by helping their congregations get covered.”

And the churches have done just that. Three events have already been held, with several people enrolled and dozens more aided with information and future appointments. The largest event so far was held on March 16 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville and served dozens of area families.

Organizers and volunteers ensure the residents in the neighborhoods around the churches know about the events by knocking on doors and making phone calls the week before.

“So many people without insurance still don’t know that they may benefit from the Affordable Care Act,” Gage said. “We encourage them to attend our enrollment events and tell them about the financial assistance that’s available. Then they can either enroll themselves on their home computer or with the assistance of an in-person expert.”

The Coalition also holds enrollment events at area community centers and other locations. For more information or to make an appointment with an in-person expert, Central Florida residents should call 877-564-5031.
