Washington, DC – Every week, volunteers from across the country join Get Covered America staff to inform their communities about new health insurance coverage options under the Affordable Care Act – so far, more than 14,000 people have donated time to the campaign. This past weekend, our team dedicated its effort to the tradition of service inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At parades, door-to-door events, and shopping malls, our team was out in force to share the news that Americans who need health coverage can get it. Many of those volunteers take personal inspiration from their own experiences with health care. For someone like Mary Taft, who found coverage for the first time in a decade, new insurance is an opportunity to help loved ones and the larger community. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.

Mary Taft – Waco, TX

At 63 years old, Mary has gone a decade without health insurance. In her last job as a teacher, she felt lucky to have benefits like health insurance. But since leaving that position, Mary pays the bills part-time as a home health worker and insurance has always been just out of reach. Her son found himself in a similar position. He’s 33 years old and takes classes while working part-time without employer benefits. That’s why she was eager to see what the Marketplace made available to them when it opened in October. With the encouragement of Get Covered staff and some research on her own, Mary selected a silver plan that best fit her budget at just $62 a month with the tax credit she receives. Mary also helped her son separately purchase the very same policy as her for just $20 a month.

Like so many, Mary encountered problems early in October with HealthCare.Gov, but waited a few weeks and remained patient with the glitches. Even when she encountered issues changing her initial platinum plan selection to a silver option, Mary saw this as an opportunity she wouldn’t let slip away. Mary’s doctor at the local health clinic made the stakes of securing insurance clear to her in their last visit. Mary’s knees have become a difficult health obstacle in recent years – so much so that the doctor says he could hardly believe she was walking. Now that she has insurance, she can follow-up to determine the best treatments to address the issue. In the meantime, Mary volunteers to table at the local library twice a week where she uses tools like the Get Covered Calculator to show her neighbors the savings found in the Marketplace. Often she shows passers-by saying, “Don’t listen to me, see for yourself.” Thanks to volunteers like Mary, more Americans will continue to see for themselves.
