Brian and Dianna Burke, from Encinitas, CA, Chose Quality Health Coverage that Will Save Them Over $900 a Month
Today, Get Covered America shares its latest story in the #GotCovered series, which highlights consumers who have found coverage that fits their needs and their budget through the new Health Insurance Marketplaces. Brian and Dianna Burke, who have both worked in the health care field for years, are thrilled to have finally found an affordable insurance plan through Covered California, and they are sharing their story on Get Covered America’s website. Our previous #GotCovered stories are available here.
Brian and Dianna Burke – Encinitas, CA
Brian and his wife Dianna were dropped from her health care coverage over a year ago when she lost her job. Her new position provides no benefits. Since both were employed in the healthcare field for decades, Brian and Dianna were distraught by the constant denials they received when they tried to shop for private insurance. They were able to manage the COBRA continuation coverage payments, but the $1,057 monthly premium took a big bite out of the couple’s budget. To make matters worse, their COBRA coverage will be exhausted by December 31, 2013. Brian and Dianna, in their early sixties and just a few years away from Medicare eligibility, were running out of options. “When we got the denial letters, the idea that we might go without health insurance for the first time in our lives put us in a panic,” says Brian.
When he realized Covered California would open its marketplace in October, Brian called their hotline weeks before to see how he could get started right away. He signed up for email updates, and was advised by their call center that a paper application would be easiest at the outset. He downloaded the application, compared plans on the website that outlined all the relevant information they needed, and mailed in his completed form the first week of October. Brian is eagerly awaiting the envelope in the mail carrying his first invoice.
The couple chose a bronze plan that that will cost about one-tenth the amount of their current coverage. Their subsidy means they will pay about $127 a month for their new insurance plan starting January 1st – right when their COBRA coverage disappears. Brian ran the numbers, comparing his plan to other levels of coverage available on the marketplace and determined that this plan would sufficiently cover out-of-pocket costs given their health care needs. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act – the Burke’s will not go a day without coverage and will save thousands off their premiums in the next year. All told, Brian estimates their new plan will cost about $11,000 less than what they paid for insurance in 2013. “Relief. That’s absolutely everything that this means to us,” he says.
