MEMPHIS, TN – Citing his track record in grassroots organizing and nonprofit leadership, Enroll America – the nation’s leading health care enrollment coalition – welcomes Jacob Flowers as the State Director of its Get Covered America-Tennessee campaign.
A native Tennessean who grew up in Memphis, Flowers has spent the last ten years as the Executive Director of the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center in Memphis. During his tenure, he transformed a small nonprofit group with a $30,000 budget and no other employees into a vibrant social justice organization with a $400,000 budget and eight staff members.
As the State Director of the Get Covered America campaign in Tennessee, Flowers will work with partner organizations throughout the state to reach out and educate uninsured Tennesseans about their health care options through Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. The campaign has organizers and volunteers in Memphis and Nashville, but will continue outreach and coalition work across the state. Get Covered America-Tennessee is part of the Get Covered Tennessee coalition, and has coordinated enrollment events and media outreach with organizations such as Seedco, the Tennessee Primary Care Association, and the mayor’s offices of Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, and Nashville.
“Jacob has shown throughout his career that he understands how to build grassroots infrastructure and work as part of community coalitions,” said Anne Filipic, President of Enroll America. “He knows the state well and will bring great leadership and energy to the Volunteer State.”
State-based health care organizations are excited to have Flowers on board to help more Tennesseans get covered.
“We welcome Jacob’s community based leadership and organizing experience in Tennessee,” said Calvin Anderson, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Chief of Staff BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. “Reaching more Tennesseans in need of health insurance is the priority and we look forward to working with Jacob and the Enroll America team to educate and engage consumers across the state.”
In addition to his work with the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center, Flowers serves as Chair of the Gandhi-King Conference on Peacemaking, Co-Chair of the Grassroots Leadership Board, and on the Steering Committee of the Gerard Vanderhaar Symposium. He will start at Get Covered America-Tennessee in early June.
“I am honored to start working to ensure that more Tennesseans have access to affordable health care coverage,” Flowers said. “Our community members have an urgent need to care for themselves and their families. I look forward to working with our partners statewide to educate and engage our community in accessing the benefits of the Affordable Care Act.”
