My Campus, Our Coverage: Resources for School-Based Health Insurance Outreach

By Christina Borg

As summer winds down, students and families will be getting ready to head back to school. Enroll America is preparing for back-to-school season by launching a national campaign, My Campus, Our Coverage, to help ensure kids, young adults, and families across America know about their health coverage options. In collaboration with our local and national partners, we are working to engage schools (elementary through universities) in the outreach and enrollment process.

Enroll America knows schools have the unique ability to provide information through their day-to-day interactions and community network. Many schools have already integrated strategies to connect families to health care services, through Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or the marketplace with in-person assisters.

Part of our ongoing work to enroll young adults, My Campus, Our Coverage highlights practical, innovative, and helpful ways that schools can determine which students are uninsured, educate parents about the affordable coverage options provided by the Affordable Care Act, and help connect families to care. The link between health and academic performance is undeniable, so it is vital to continue investing in the health of children and their families to enable them to succeed as students.

Between new school year orientations for community colleges, open houses at high schools, and parent-teacher nights at pre-schools, the beginning of the school year is the perfect time for schools to connect with families and inform them about their insurance options. Open enrollment will be right around the corner on November 1, so parents can start looking into their options using tools like the Get Covered Plan Explorer. Schools can also help parents connect with free, local in-person assisters, via the Get Covered Connector Tool, to help them navigate the health insurance marketplace and choose the best plan for their budget and family’s needs.

We have made great strides in reducing the number of uninsured children and young adults, but we are not done yet. We are excited to work with schools across the nation as we approach the next open enrollment period. And stay tuned for more strategies and tips on reaching out to young adults!
