More Positive News: Medicaid/CHIP Enrollments on the Rise

By Liz Hagan

Though the excitement of the first day of open enrollment is now behind us, we have something else to get excited about today: new Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollment numbers! Sure, a lot of the buzz lately has been about the number of people expected to #GetCovered through the marketplaces. But here at Enroll America we’re just as excited to hear that 9.1 million consumers #GotCovered through Medicaid and CHIP since October 2013.

Those 9.1 million consumers represent an overall increase in Medicaid/CHIP enrollment of about 16 percent compared to before OE1’s start. Taking a closer look, states that expanded Medicaid saw an average increase in enrollment of about 23 percent, and non-expansion states saw an increase in enrollment of more than 6 percent between October 2013 and September 2014.

This news is one part of a larger trend: Americans are eager to enroll in coverage, and luckily individuals can enroll in Medicaid and CHIP year round. This past weekend alone, more than 5,000 people attended Get Covered America outreach and enrollment events across the country. So let’s all keep our heads up high and continue to make sure consumers are made aware of their coverage options and #GetCovered and #StayCovered.
