For months, we’ve all been waiting for news about the second annual federal grant opportunity for Navigators. Now, the wait is over.
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the new funding opportunity this afternoon. HHS anticipates awarding $60 million for Navigators in federally facilitated and partnership marketplaces. If your organization is interested in applying for a grant, letters of intent are due June 30, the deadline for applications is July 10, and HHS anticipates making the awards on September 8.
Stay tuned for more details and guidance, including upcoming calls HHS is hosting.
We all know how crucial the in-person application assistance Navigators provide is. Health insurance is complicated. The sign-up process can be daunting for consumers. But in-person help from trained experts makes consumers more likely to enroll successfully, as we discussed in an issue brief in March. In addition, our recent report on national survey results with PerryUndem Research & Communication found that people who enrolled with the help of assisters were more likely to find the process “easy.” The survey also found that Latinos were more likely to value in-person help — a key consideration for ongoing outreach and enrollment efforts.
We look forward to working with the next group of Navigators!
