Onward and Upward

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. The court’s ruling has been much anticipated and much commented upon by both supporters and opponents of the law. Today’s ruling means one thing for Enroll America: We will surely have the opportunity to help millions of uninsured Americans sign up for the health coverage they want and so desperately need.

Today’s decision is a win for the nearly 50 million people who are uninsured and who will have new options for health coverage in 2014 because of the law. Our next tasks are to make sure that Americans know about those options and that they are able to enroll quickly and easily when the time comes.

Multiple recent polls have found that the vast majority of people who will be eligible for new coverage, and for tax credits to help pay for that coverage, are completely unaware that this help is coming. According to a recent survey conducted by CVS Caremark, that number is a shocking 78 percent of uninsured Americans. This is an enormous public information hurdle to overcome, but overcome it we will. Next month, Enroll America will embark on an ambitious research project with GMMB and Lake Research Partners to determine the right messages, messengers, and media for reaching different uninsured groups.

This research will form the basis for an enormous, nationwide public information campaign that Enroll America will launch in mid-2013. The campaign will be creative, and it will be effective. Together with our growing list of diverse partners, we will blanket the country using every avenue possible to ensure that every single American who lacks health coverage knows that coverage is available and how to sign up for it.

Now is the time to redouble our efforts to ensure that streamlined, simple, and seamless enrollment processes are in place. Decades of experience tell us that a complicated enrollment process will keep people from getting the coverage they need. New technology and innovations such as the Enroll UX2014 project are crucial to ensuring that the application and enrollment process is easy so that people who are looking for coverage can sign up quickly and start getting health care.

The time is now. We know that coverage will be available for millions of people who need it. Our job is to make sure they get it.
